Energy from Waste Facility – EDF – 2-Hour Fire-Rated Dividing Partition

Project Overview

JPS Jumbo Partition Systems were appointed to design and install high-performance internal partition walls within the industrial process areas of the Exeter Energy from Waste facility, operated by EDF Energy.

Energy from Waste facilities present challenging environments, with complex mechanical plant, large structural spans and demanding fire safety requirements. The partitions were required to provide robust separation between operational areas while maintaining both high acoustic performance and enhanced fire resistance.

Engineering the Solution

The partition system was designed to accommodate wall heights of up to 12 metres, integrating within the large-scale process halls of the facility.

Using high-performance gypsum fibreboard systems, the installation delivered a durable industrial partition capable of meeting both structural and fire protection requirements while maintaining strong acoustic performance.

The solution achieved:

• 120-minute fire resistance (E120 / I120)
• Acoustic performance of up to Rw 62 dB
• Severe-duty industrial durability

Installation Challenges

The project required the partition systems to be integrated within a highly complex mechanical environment containing heavy plant equipment, pipework and operational infrastructure.

Key challenges included:

• Installing large-scale partitions within industrial process halls
• Working at heights up to 12 metres
• Coordinating installation around mechanical and structural elements
• Delivering performance without the need for additional structural steel support

Through careful engineering and planning, JPS delivered a system that maintained structural integrity and fire protection performance while fitting seamlessly within the existing building framework.
